I am writing this post to notify all my customers of a scam by Domain Registry of America. If you registered your own domain (.com address), you will probably receive a letter from this company at some time.
The letter appears to be an official document making it look like you risk losing your domain if you don’t send them money. The truth is, these people have nothing to do with your domain.
So, how did they get your name? … In most cases, when you registered your domain, your contact information is public. They simply look for domains that are about to expire and send everyone this notice. I personally can’t believe they are allowed to do this. But, enough people must send them money because this scam has been going on for years!
Most of our customers register their domains through Godaddy, Network Solutions, Register.com or Dynadot. You should renew your domains there, never with Domain Registry of America.
The letter opens like this:
“As a courtesy (yeah right) to domain name holders, we are sending you this notification of the domain name registration that is due to expire in the next few months….”
The letter goes on to say:
“You must renew your domain name to retain exclusive rights to it on the web…”
If you do send them money, they will try to transfer your domain away from your current registrar. If you have email or hosting with your registrar – be warned – you may actually loose your email and possibly your website as well.
Don’t send these people a dime!
